Match Report, South Wales Dragons V Northamptonshire VIXINS, 7th and 8th July 2008

South Wales Dragons completed a comfortable league and cup double over Northants Vi.XI.NS at Blackweir Park in Cardiff.

In Saturday's cup clash Northants won the toss and batted and handed a debut to Emma Gavrilovic the sister of the club's captain.

Northants batsmen battled gamely and managed to last 26 overs but excellent and accurate bowling from Damion Corrigan, Howard Greenhill, Karl Phillips, Andy Law and Dave Ellingham meant that the VI.Xi.NS could only creep to 72 All Out. Ian Goodearl looked good in reaching 17 before an ill-judged drive too close to Damion Corrigan who snapped up the chance. Nick Killen and Robin Williams also battled hard but failed to reach double figures.

In response it took less than 10 overs for Toby Warren (41) and Karl Phillips (17) to see their team to a 10 wicket win despite an excellent 4 overs from Dave Keeling that saw Phillips lucky to survive on more than one occasion.

In the league game Dragons chose to bat after winning the toss. Sam Wishart and Andy Law both fell early bowled by Alastair Provan for ducks. Howard Greenhill and Damion Corrigan then took control and batted beautifully and looked almost completely unthreatened. Greenhill eventually retired out for 56 with Corrigan retiring out for 101 scored off just 44 balls.

Provan claimed two more wickets including Karl Phillips bowled for a second ball duck. Nick Killen also secured his first wicket of the season.

In response Northants put in a miserable batting performance that saw the whole top order fail. Dragons again bowled superbly and Northants hampered their cause when Ian Goodearl was run out for 0. The b1's had to rebuild the innings fom 30/6 with David Gavrilovic achieving top scorer, highest partnership and longest innings as he struck 12 from 26 balls in a stand of 18 in which nobody else faced a ball. This shows just how poorly Northants batted. Robin Williams and Nick Killen again battled well and David Keeling lasted some time without really scoring.

So a good weekend for Dragons with two very efficient performances will re-assert their claims of making a serious challenge for a league and cup double.
