At a warm and sunny Highgate Wood Metro were boosted by Heindrich Swanepoel and Hassan Khan returning to the club and they gave a debut to Mark Bond.Northants gave debut's to former Worcester duo Chris Norman and Eddie Claridge.
After being put in Metro opening duo Rory Field and Matt Dean made a rapid start scoring at around 10 an over before Matt Dean was caught in the deep by Mark Provan from the bowling of Ian Goodearl for 49. The following over (the 10th) David Gavrilovic clean bowled Amit Amin for a duck.
Metro then continued untroubled through to the 15 over drinks break. Then in the 17th over Alastair Provan struck, the Northants fast bowler removed both Rory Field and Adam Benjamin within the space of 5 balls after Field had passed 50. Provan then removed Hassan Khan and Heindrich Swanepoel and Chris Norman claimed his first Northants wicket as Metro declaired on 233/7 after 28 overs. Bryn Reynolds batted very solidly for 12 overs scoring around 30 not out.
Northants innings started solidly enough with Ian Goodearl and David Gavrilovic safely seeing off the initial 6 over burst from Rory Field and Heindrich Swanepoel reaching 7/0. Goodearl then crashed the first ball of the 7th over from Amit Amin before carving the second delivery straight to Matt Dean who held on well to hold the catch with the ball really travelling. Gavrilovic who clearly had no intention of playing anything that in any way resembled an attacking shot fell at the end of the ninth over mis-judging an Amit Amin delivery which clipped his leg stump.
The innings did last another 14 overs with Mark Provan and Brad Fisher especially showing some fight but in the end Northants defensive efforts fell about 8 overs short leaving them scoring around 47 after the last three wickets fell very rapidly.
So in the end a comfortable Metro win but Northants in no way disgraced themselves against a strong Metro side and as Metro will be serious title challengers this season Northants will feel they have a chance of fighting for a top 5 finish.
